Rolling Inspiration recently visited the Lagoon Beach Hotel in Cape Town to attend the OTASA 2014 Congress. Delegates were treated to presentations from local and international speakers, a trade exhibition and several social functions. A national OTASA Congress is held every two years and is the key scientific gathering of the profession.

We would like to extend congratulations to the below listed prize winners at the OTASA Congress 2014.

  • Life Esidemi Award for Best Research paper in Psychiatry & Mental Health  - Kristyn Wolhuter
  • Discovery Award for Best Research paper in Evidence- or outcomes-based practice - Desiree van der Vyver

Albie Sachs

The Occupational Therapy Association of South Africa (OTASA) also awarded the fifth Albie Sachs Award on the first night of the congress.

Judge Albie Sachs was a judge of the Constitutional Court, and he played a key role in developing the current South African constitution. He lost his right arm and the sight in one eye in a car-bomb attack in Maputo in 1988 and came into contact with occupational therapy during the course of his rehabilitation.

OTASA applauds Judge Sachs for truly embodying the principle of full integration of people with disabilities in society.
