Cannonball Run.

That says it all. Contestants in sleek sports cars go on an Amazing Race type adventure along a course woven with clues and highlighted by epic events. This is no tortoise-and-rabbit race but a considered course governed by an approved protocol of rules that ensures the safety of each contestant, lucky passenger, marshal and enthusiastic observers.

In November Ashley Village and QASA KZN hosted one of the pit stops. Members of QAK excitedly gathered in anticipation of hi-performance cars growling down the driveway to refuel their hungry engines. 23 super cars participated including a show stopping yellow Lamborghini, Porsche, Mercedes, BMW, Subaru, Toyota, Audi and the incredible R8, Chevrolet and an Alpha Romeo.

The smiles, camaraderie and enthusiasm were immense. Cannonballers keep returning year after year to raise money for QASA just by showing-off. QASA received a generous donation of just short of R40,000.00 and we would like to thank the Cannonballers and commend the Round Table on this inspiring initiative.

Round Table Club of Sandown 150 is planning a Cannonball Run Africa for August 2012 and are looking for international celebrities in the motorsport world to feature in the event. If you can think of an international celebrity who would be interested please drop us a line.

The Big Apple

QASA members, Anton Engelbrecht and Ari Seirlis, were part of the South African Achilles Athletic club delegation that participated in the New York marathon 2010 in November. This was the first time for Anton and the second time for Ari, who completed the marathon in 2005. Says Ari:"What an awesome experience! 45,000 people were at the start on Stratton Island with more than a dozen South Africans with disabilities representing the Achilles brand. It was minus 2 degrees!"

Anton had a great time. "Two million people were standing next to the road and shouted their support for the whole 42 kilometres. Even when I was tired I couldn't stop because of the people cheering you on! Some people had banners saying: 'Hi complete stranger, I am proud of you!'"

Anton and Ari completed the 26 mile adventure in six hours 15 min with their guides Cameron, Lani, Cathryn and Eddie. The New York marathon is an extraordinary experience for any person who feels they have the resilience, and ability, to complete 26 miles through the five precincts of the Big Apple.
