Veteran SA wheelchair racer, Ernst Van Dyk, finished second in the New York City Marathon in 1:40:14. He clocked the same time as Swiss winner, Marcel Hug, after a battle between five athletes down the finishing straight.

It was the fourth time this year that Ernst had finished in the top three at a major city marathon. South African Press Association reports that he also finished on the podium at the Boston, London and Chicago marathons this season.

Earlier that month, Ernst beat Australia’s Kurt Fearnley by a second to win the 2013. Chicago Marathon Men’s Wheelchair race.

According to NBC Chicago’s website, “a final burst of speed by the South African at the end of the race sealed the victory.”

“It was pretty exciting. We were together the whole way, playing games, playing cat and mouse. I had to dig a little bit more and attacked the corner with good speed,” he said after the race. Source: Sports 24
