Sarah Nkgweng struggled to get to and from work everyday using public transport with awheelchair. She has many a story about theattitudes of passengers in taxis who refused to sit next to her because she isdisabled, about being charged a triple fare because nobody would sit next toher, about the taxi driver who wanted to leave her wheelchair behind as it tookup too much space and about getting to work sopping wet because she couldn’thold an umbrella and push her wheelchair.

Sarah wanted a modest car but one that was reliable, funand trendy! She looked for fuel efficiency, space for her wheelchair, ease oftransfer and space for her boyfriend! Fortunately for Sarah the i20 1.4 isavailable in with an automatic gearbox. She loves the versatility of her carand finds it very accommodating. Her wheelchair fits snuggly behind her seatwhen Sello, her boyfriend, is with her andeasily fits on the passenger seat next to her when she is driving alone. Thecar even reminds her strap her chair down when it is on the passenger seat!

The i20 comes standard with Radio/CD/MP3 controls on thesteering wheel, ideal for people using hand controls as she can change channelsand volume without having to take her hands off the hand control or steeringwheel.

The conveniently situated instrument panel providesuseful information such as distance to empty, outside temperature, fuelconsumption and trip distance. Other standard features are: electric windows, central locking, adjustable steering, electric door mirrors and trip computer.

The driver’s seat is height adjusted manually but thelevers are large and easy to use – even for people with limited hand function. The seat has a good recline range to give the driver enough space to load theirwheelchair past the steering wheel.

The i20 has the full 5 star Euro NCAP rating which meanslots of airbags and an Electronic Stability Program, including ABS brakes – soit keeps Sarah safe and not just happy! It is available in a 1,4 and 1,6 manualwith the automatic gearbox option on the 1,4. At R167900 incl VAT and CO2 tax there can be no argument about value for money.

Sarah uses Easy Rider hand controls with the control onthe left. She likes having her stronger right hand in control of the steeringwheel and, with the control positioned on her left, it gives her more space forher legs when she transfers. She finds these controls light and easy to use,and they position close enough to the steering wheel to allow her to keep twohands on the steering wheel most of the time.

Gone are the days of getting to work late, and putting up with insults and abuse in taxis. Sarah now loves sitting in traffic!
