I have been travelling quite a lot over the past couple of months for work, the QASA AGM and doing Quads 4 Quads, and so am going to be featuring some the various establishments I’ve stayed in for these events. Please note that not all are up to National Building Regulations, or Universal Access Principals, but we need to start building up a datebase of places who are offering some facilities for persons with disabilities. The ones that have already started to change their properties, are usually quite open to suggestions.
The Protea Hotel Umhlanga Ridge 4Star Hotel, Umhlanga, KZN
Situated across the road from the Gateway Shopping Centre, this hotel has two accessible rooms available. There is a long access ramp to get onto the area in front of the hotel from the street, but there are always staff members on-hand to assist. Should you be driving, there are two accessible bays in the undercover parking area.
The Accessible rooms are 217 & 227 and have a king-size bed, counter with tea and coffee making facilities in front of the window, a luggage rack and wall-mounted TV. The cupboard has a lower rail with fixed hangars as well as a shelf holding a safe and a storage area below. The washroom is accessed via a sliding door and there is a roll-in shower which is up a short ramp. The controls and caddy are a bit far away from the wallmounted shower seat. The hotel also has a gym and day spa. There are two pools – the lower one has a built up wall – which makes transfers from a wheelchair easier.
+- R925 per room per night
The Hampshire Hotel, Ballito KZN
This hotel has a universally compliant front desk, and they have seven rooms with roll-in showers. However there are no shower seats, the basin vanity has a vertical which doesn’t allow access under the basin and the King-size beds are too high! There is a lowered rail in the cupboard and the safe is at a compliant height. There is a fridge and tea and coffee making facilities in the room. There is an inter-leading door to the standard room next door which has twin Queen beds. Other facilities include a swimming pool & Jacuzzi, Fitness centre, uncapped complimentary Wireless Internet Access and a dining area with separate tables and chairs.
From Single R550 per room per night.
Tozandre Guest House, Standerton
This is a favourite for persons with disabilities who ride Quads 4 Quads as the owners are so willing to be of assistance. The Guest House has undergone quite extensive renovations over the past five years, with new rooms being added on including a room which has an accessible bathroom. This room has space for a Queensize and a single bed should one be travelling with an assistant. There are paved pathways between the dining area, pool and rooms, however there are two areas that need to be adjusted so as to make all areas fully accessible to all – one being the angle of the ramp from the parking area up onto the patio in front of the accessible room and the other is the two steps down into the dining area. All rooms have small two plate cookers with ovens as well as a microwave and tea & coffee making facilities.
Rates from Single R400 per room per night
