For those of us who have families or who just want to holiday together and need affordable self-catering accessible properties, we need to look to our community to find private properties that have been converted for people with disabilities who then offer these holiday homes for rental when they are not using them. One such property is a holiday home in Kenton-On-Sea that is owned by Toni & Darlene Gava.

Kenton-On-Sea is a holiday village situated between the Bushmans and Kariega rivers on the Eastern Cape Coastline midway between Port Elizabeth and East London and close to Grahamstown. Aside from the usual beach activities, there are lots of nature options on both rivers and in the nature reserve. The surrounding inland has many top class game reserves offering luxury and the Big Five game experiences.

Toni & Darlene’s house has two levels with entertainment areas on both levels - the top one is wheelchair friendly. The house can sleep 12 and is suitable for two families sharing. There are six bedrooms (upper main en-suite) and four bathrooms. The plot has a steep gradient, so the garden is limited, and most of the plot has natural vegetation. Outdoor living is mainly on the balconies, the main one affording view of the sea and lagoon. Access from the driveway into the upper level is via a ramp and there is ample space for parking. The Kitchen is open-plan and has separate counters with pull out baskets to store utensils and equipment. The stove is a standard upright freestanding stove with the controls on the back panel, which is not accessible for wheelchair users. The Lounge has large couches and loose chairs, which can be moved around to accommodate any wheelchair. There are sliding doors onto the balcony which has a built-in braai.

The main bedroom has the accessible bathroom en-suite. There is a standard cupboard with drawers and hanging space but no lower rail. There is no dressing table. The sliding door into the bathroom has a standard opening, and there is a standard bath, a roll-in shower, corner basin and toilet with grab rails. The mirror is placed above the tile line, which is too high for wheelchair users to see into, but there is a small shelf next to the basin for toiletries.

The other rooms and bathrooms have standard layouts and equipment. The lower lounge area has the table tennis – so no tournaments for us wheelies, unless we get carried down the stairs!

Rental of this property includes: All linen; a fully equipped kitchen; washing machine & tumble dryer; dishwasher; DSTV and will be serviced daily during the week (Mon – Fri).
